400th Anniversary Commemoration

Sunrise Service:

a commemorative video released on the 400th anniversary of the First Encounter (20 min.)

Led by Nauset Interfaith Association, the year of commemoration ended as it began, on the beach with the First Encounter origin story.  The service, which includes prayers and music from Christian, Jewish, and Wampanoag traditions, was filmed at First Encounter Beach on December 8, 2019 and released on YouTube on December 8, 2020.

Eastham 400: Our History Restored:

a commemorative video released on the 400th anniversary of the First Encounter (55 min.)

This film serves as a compilation of the Eastham 400 Commemoration program talking points and highlights.  Hosted by Chair Jim Russo and offering a variety of perspectives, the film focuses on both local history and its meanings for today.  The world premiere of this film took place on December 8, 2020, and it is now available online.

Eastham 400: A Community Discussion:

a community Zoom discussion recorded on the 400th anniversary of the First Encounter (45 min.)

This video was recorded via Zoom on December 8, 2020. The town of Eastham presents the Proclamation for Tribal Rights in Eastham for the Wampanoag Nation. The discussion is then opened to the community, reflecting on Eastham 400 events and the film Eastham 400: Our History Restored.

Dr. David Silverman of George Washington University, author, educator, and critical historian, presents a virtual talk hosted by the Eastham Public Library on December 13, 2020.  The video was recorded on Zoom and features Dr. Silverman’s PowerPoint.

Thirteen Moons: A Meditation on Indigenous Life:

This meditation, led by Wampanoag Robert Peters was presented as a virtual talk for Eastham Public Library on December 21, 2020.  The meditation features music, art, poetry, and essays and was originally led via Zoom.

The Story of the ‘First Encounter’ at Nauset:

On The Point, historian and author Ian Saxine talks about “The Story of the ‘First Encounter’ At Nauset“, his new book about events before, during, and after colonists and indigenous people meet in 1620. Joining him in a discussion about what shapes historical narratives and how myths are created and perpetuated are Paula Peters, a member of the Wampanoag Tribe, and Tom Ryan, vice chair of the Town of Eastham’s 400 Commemoration Committee. Spirit Run: a WCAI radio show hosted by Mindy Todd on The Point (50 minutes; audio only)

On The Point, an interview with Noé Álvarez, author of “Spirit Run: a 6,000 Mile Marathon Through North America’s Stolen Land.”  As a teenager, Álvarez (a Latino) joined a Native American movement that organized marathons to renew cultural connections across North America. Telling their stories alongside his own, Álvarez writes about a journey that pushed him to his limits – not only overcoming hunger, thirst, and fear but also asserting Indigenous and working-class humanity. Running through mountains, deserts, and cities, and through the Mexican territory his parents left behind, Álvarez forges a new relationship with the land, carrying with him the dream of a liberated future. Encounters Before the First Encounter:

Dr. Kathleen Bragdon, author of “Native People of Southern New England, 1500-1650” presents on the many visitors that local Native Americans encountered before 1620.  The video was recorded at the Salt Pond Visitors Center (Cape Cod National Seashore) on September 15, 2019.
