Campfire Series

In addition to the Sunset Series, Eastham 400 also produced a second program called the Campfire Series, which took place every Sunday in July and August 2020. Each episode of the Campfire Series is about one hour long. These fire-side style presentations focus more in-depth on some of the themes that are discussed on the Sunset Series.

The First Encounter at Eastham: The Story Retold

The first Campfire Series video, released July 5, is a recording of a presentation given by Ian Saxine last fall in which he speaks about his book, The Story of the “First Encounter” at Nauset.

 

Landscape Change on Cape Cod

Presented by Mark Adams

The second Campfire Series video, released July 12, is a presentation given by Cape Cod National Seashore geoscientist Mark Adams.  Adams speaks about the ways the lanscape has change in the last 400 years and what Cape Cod’s geological future may look like.

 

Reflections on Global and Local Migration

Presented by Mark Adams and Rebecca Eissenova

The third Campfire Series video, released July 19, is a two-part presentation given by Cape Cod National Seashore geoscientist Mark Adams and Interim Legal Director of immigration law programs at Catholic Social Services.  Adams speaks about the ecology and culture of migrations and shares his experiences working at a rfugee camp in Greece.  Eissenova speaks about immigration processes in the United States and immigration on Cape Cod.

 

Remembering the First Encounter | Dec. 8, 2019

A collection of presentations filmed on the anniversary of the First Encounter

The fourth Campfire Series video, released July 26, is a recording of an event commemorating the 399th anniversary of the First Encounter and the beginning of the year’s events.  Wampanoag, descendents of Eastham’s founding families, and other Cape Codders reflect on the First Encounter through music, dance, poetry and historical prose.

The fifth Campfire Series video, released August 2, is a collection of personal stories and family history given by descendents of each of Eastham’s founding families (Prence, Doane, Snow, Cooke, Smalley, Higgins, and Bangs).

 

Native America – Wampanoag challenges, reflections, and ideals

The sixth Campfire Series video, released August 9, is an interview with Mashpee Wampanoag Earl Mills Jr., who reflects on the challenges Wampanoag face today and changes that have ocurred within his lifetime and throughout history. Conversation includes the Mashpee 9, Native American mascots, and reflections on the First Encounter.  Mills also reads Frank James’s Suppressed Speech.

 

Cape Cod Origins, Traditions and Encounters

Presented by Linda Coombs and John Hanlon

The seventh Campfire Series video, recorded at the Eastham Windmill Green on August 30, features Aquinnah Wampanoag Linda Coombs and John Hanlon, who has run the campfire programs at Cape Cod National Seashore for the last 20 years.  Coombs and Hanlon present on the First Encounter, Cape Cod’s origins according to Wampanoag history, and Wampanoag religious traditions.
