When it comes to the foundation of this country\, history books tend to focus on the Mayflower arrival in 1620 and the Harvest Festival that came to be known as Thanksgiving in 1621. The myths that have surrounded these events have shaped the world that we know\, but the actual events were far different. What became the beginning of one people also marked the tragic downfall of another. DESCRIPTION:The Eastham Public Library presents\, No Refuge: Colonialism and the Wampanoags of Cape Cod; A Virtual Talk with Author David Silverman \nThis lecture will explore colonialism in the lives of the Wampanoags of Cape Cod across the centuries. Though Cape Cod managed to escape the violence of King Philip’s War of 1675-76\, that should not overshadow how the English and their successors exploited Cape Wampanoags over the long term. \nTogether we will trace how the Wampanoags both suffered under and mitigated colonial landed expansion\, Christian evangelism\, debt peonage\, court-ordered servitude\, and racism. The fact of Wampanoag survival speaks less to the absence of destructive colonial influences on the Cape\, than Wampanoag resourcefulness and certain benefits of geography. \nDavid J. Silverman (Ph.D.\, Princeton\, 2000) specializes in Native American\, Colonial American\, and American racial history. His most recent book is This Land is Their Land: The Wampanoag Indians\, Plymouth Colony\, and the Troubled History of Thanksgiving. He is also the author of Thundersticks: Firearms and the Violent Transformation of Native America; Red Brethren: The Brothertown and Stockbridge Indians and the Problem of Race in Early America; and Faith and Boundaries: Colonists\, Christianity\, and Community among the Wampanoag Indians of Martha’s Vineyard\, 1600-1871. \nRegister at easthamlibrary.org \nThis program is part of the Eastham 400 Commemoration.

DESCRIPTION:“Our Story: 400 Years of Wampanoag History” is a multi-media\, traveling exhibit that illuminates America’s earliest beginnings from the Wampanoag perspective—a voice largely silenced in the colonial narrative. The Wampanoag have lived in southeastern Massachusetts for more than 12\,000 years and were the first tribe encountered by the passengers of the Mayflower. The exhibit begins with the kidnapping and enslavement of 27 Wampanoag men—including Tisquantum (later known as Squanto)\, the only captive to return home. Its final chapter discusses the brutal legacy of colonization\, the effects of which are still felt today. The beliefs and practices of the Wampanoag\, including powwows\, politics\, religion\, and every-day life are portrayed in words\, images\, and film. \n“Our Story: 400 Years of Wampanoag History” is conceptualized\, researched\, and produced by SmokeSygnals Marketing and Communications and The Indian Spiritual and Cultural Training Council Inc. The exhibit is part of Plymouth 400\, Inc.’s Signature Programs and Events and will continue to travel through 2020. Additional chapters of Wampanoag history will be added each year in November.

DESCRIPTION:Community radio station teams up with Harwich festival for an anniversary-date concert \nProvincetown\, November 6: On Wednesday\, November 11th\, WOMR will play 60 plus minutes of music from the Harwich (UK) Festival of the Arts\, the community radio station announced today. \nThe event—called the Mayflower Connection—is part of the celebration of Provincetown 400\, a reminder that 400 years ago the Mayflower sailed from Harwich to Provincetown\, arriving at the tip of the Cape on November 11th.  In celebration of the voyage and the ties it established between the UK and the North American continent\, the show will air at 1:00 pm ET and will feature performances and music showcased at this year’s virtual Harwich Arts Festival. \nThe Mayflower Connection program will contain a broad spectrum of music including jazz\, folk\, and classical from major performing artists in the UK\, including Alex Hart\, Philip Clouts\, and Alina Bzhezhinska. \n“We’re very excited about the Mayflower Connection\,” says John Braden\, executive director of WOMR. “We’re hoping that it’s the first of many continuing collaborations between the two communities and are looking forward to an ongoing relationship with the festival.” \nThe Mayflower was built in Harwich (pronounced Harich or Harridge) sometime before the year 1600 and was commanded and part-owned by her master\, Captain Christopher Jones. Harwich itself is a combination working port and seaside tourist destination not entirely unlike Provincetown. \nWhile most of the Mayflower 400 activities were postponed due to the coronavirus\, others have gone online as virtual events. Festival organizers plan to move some of the events to 2021. \nABOUT WOMR: WOMR (OuterMost Community Radio) went on the air in 1982. Learn more about the pilgrims’ journey to America\, and their encounters with the Wampanoag people during the five weeks MAYFLOWER was anchored in Provincetown Harbor. \n​This book was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Award when it was first published in 2006. This year\, Penguin has published an updated paperback edition with a new preface (available on the CCMM website). Philbrick is also the author of In the Heart of the Sea\, which won the National Book Award for nonfiction in 2000\, and was the basis for the 2015 film of the same name\, directed by Ron Howard.

Oct. 17\n“This year marks the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims voyage to the New World aboard the Mayflower\,” emails David Martin\, the symposium’s coordinator. “We want to remind folks that Cape Cod is a very important part of this story.” \nThe Cape & Islands Historical Association\, established more than 40 years ago\, consists of more than 50 museums and historical societies on Cape Cod\, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. \nAuthor William Martin\, who wrote the historical novel “Cape Cod\,” will be the symposium’s keynote speaker. Ten historians\, teachers and Cape authors who have written essays exploring the roles Cape Cod played in the early colony will talk about the settlers’ attitudes as they approached Cape Cod\, their views of the native people they encountered and traded with\, and the Mayflower families who settled on Cape Cod. \nSpeakers will also share little-known stories about the colony and reasons the settlers could have remained here instead of moving on to Plymouth\, among other topics. Authors will summarize their essays and lead a Q&A session after each talk.\nAdmission is $25. Registrants will receive copies of the 10 essays in their entirety prior to the symposium and a link to access the Zoom-based virtual event from their computers. \nThe registration deadline is Monday\, Sept. 28. His mother\, Lucy Jane (Hopkins) Buckley\, was born in a midwife’s house next to the Cove burying ground and the family homestead still stands on Hopkins Lane in East Orleans \nSo the Two-time Emmy-nominated producer and host of public media’s Hit and Run History decided the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s arrival was the best time to focus on New Plymouth’s iconoclast tavernkeeper’s connection to Shakespeare’s drunken and mutinous “Stephano” in The Tempest. In their Gumshoe Historian style\, Buckley and crew seek out the reality of a man who was everywhere at the founding of America. \nAt 7 PM on Wednesday\, September 2\, Eastham Library will host an online discussion with Buckley and show clips from his film “Stephano: The True Story of Shakespeare’s Shipwreck.” \nA production of the Cape Cod Community Media Center\, the program was awarded a pre-production grant from Mass Humanities. \nThe program starts online at 7:00 PM on September 2.
